Family Home on Conservation Land
This “1970s A-frame” was built by the family that owned the Vancouver basalt quarry just north of the Colombia River. New owners negotiated the acquisition of a small lot within a ten-acre parcel donated to the Colombia Land Trust. This project was one of my early collaborations with Peter Lynn of Pomarius Nursery.

New owners are avid gardeners; they expanded the vegetable and herb garden to include a mix of colorful shrubs and perennials creating a gathering space just above the River
Sketch Plan
The owners wanted to sit up in bed and see Mt. Hood in the distance each morning. We planted a series of boxwood globes and hedges to frame the view.
Final Design
Our planting plan included large basalt boulders and a mix of climate-ready plants and shrubs low enough to maintain 270-degree views from inside the house.
